Arthurs Hill has two sit down restaurants, Solomons and the Komal. It also has a number of takaways so I have divided them all up into four categories (see above).
The only Chinese takeaway in Arthurs Hill is along Walter Terrace at the bottom of Stanton st, it has always provided good food for me in the past.
Probably the best vegetarian restaurant in not only Arthur's Hill but the whole of Newcastle was The Red Herring which sadly closed down in 1999. This was a co-operative with a small shop which sold the most wonderful bread, unfortunately the management of it, particularly the stock control, and customer service, were nothing short of disasterous and it was amazing that it kept going for so long. Late in 2002 the premises were taken over again to create a Punjabi Dhaba restaurant, Solomon's.

The Komal, the local indian resturant was once a basic and exceptionally cheap place where you could (and still can) take your own wine, in its former days it was very popular with students and locals. It has now been completely refurbished (2001) with a more upmarket ambience with the new clientele coming from all around Newcastle.

Ayesha's Sweet shop also provides takeaways.
Arthur's Hills does not have
a lively cafe society such as Jesmond with Willow Tea's or the numerous cafes
in the centre of Newcastle. Just behind the General Hospital is the Copper
Kettle which is an excellent traditional tea shop where a large number of
Hospital employees escape to at lunch time. Within Arthur's Hill the nearest
to a tea shop is The Chat Shop a centre run by the
local church and reported to offer the cheapest cup of tea in town.
There are several moderate Chippies along Westgate Rd. However I have never found one that comes up to the standard of either the Golden Chippie along Chillingham Rd in Heaton or the one up the side of Gosforth Bank. The local fish and chip shop, Robinsons Once tried never forgotten! |
